Insulation Calculator

Estimate insulation for walls, ceilings, attics, or floors. Deduct areas not being insulated, enter your product’s coverage, and calculate whole packs or bags with an optional material cost.

Enter Your Insulation Measurements

Estimate one product and coverage specification at a time. Calculate different products or insulation levels separately.

Product coverage

Enter the total coverage printed for one pack, not one batt, unless you purchase batts individually.

Two layers doubles the coverage requirement using this same product. For different products or partial layers, calculate each separately. Layers do not calculate an assembly R-value.

Adjust the starting allowance for cuts and handling losses. Do not duplicate an allowance already included in product coverage.

QUICK START

How to Use the Insulation Calculator

Measure the areas being insulated, enter coverage for your selected product, and calculate whole packs or bags and optional material cost.

  1. Measure the area to insulate

Enter rectangular dimensions or an already measured area. Deduct doors, windows, or other areas not being insulated. Select Add Another Area for additional sections. If your measurement already excludes openings, leave the excluded area at zero.

  2. Choose the product and its coverage

Select batts, rolls, boards, or blown-in insulation. Enter the coverage for one purchased pack, roll unit, or bag in the matching area unit. For blown-in insulation, use the manufacturer’s chart coverage for your selected insulation level, required depth, and application.

  3. Add layers and ordering details

For batts, rolls, or boards, enter the number of full layers using the same product. Adjust the extra allowance for your installation and enable optional cost to enter a price per purchased unit. Different products or partial layers need separate calculations.

  4. Calculate and check the purchase quantity

Select Calculate Insulation to review the net area, coverage requirement, and whole-unit purchase estimate. Cost uses the rounded quantity. Recalculate after changing inputs, or select Clear All to start again. Check product dimensions and installation requirements before ordering.

Coverage is product-specific: Changing product type clears the coverage and price fields. Blown-in mode uses chart coverage without a layer multiplier; its R-value and depth labels are reminders only. The calculator estimates material quantity, not the resulting thermal performance.

WORKED EXAMPLE

Insulation Calculation Example

See how measured area, exclusions, product coverage, and an extra allowance determine the number of insulation packs to buy.

A 50 m² area with one insulation layer

This example excludes 5 m² from the measured area and uses a hypothetical batt product covering 6 m² per pack. A 5% extra allowance is added for cutting and handling.

Gross measured area
50 m²
Area not being insulated
5 m²
Net area to insulate
50 − 5 = 45 m²
Full coverage layers
1
Coverage including 5% allowance
45 × 1.05 = 47.25 m²
Coverage per pack
6 m²
Calculated pack requirement
47.25 ÷ 6 = 7.875
ESTIMATED PURCHASE QUANTITY 8 packs

Eight packs provide 48 m² of nominal product coverage. At an example price of $40 per pack, the material cost is $320.

The product coverage formula

Use the total coverage of one purchased unit. Keep the area requirement and product coverage in the same units.

Required coverage including allowance

Net area × full layers ×
(1 + allowance ÷ 100)

  • Net area: measured area minus the parts not being insulated.
  • Full layers: complete layers using the same batt, roll, or board product.
  • Allowance: an additional percentage for your installation needs.
  • Unit coverage: coverage of one purchased pack, roll unit, or bag.
Purchase quantity and material cost

Round up (required coverage ÷ unit coverage)
Material cost = whole units × price per unit

If this example used two full layers of the same product, the requirement would be 45 × 2 × 1.05 = 94.5 m², giving 16 packs. Layer count estimates quantity; it does not calculate the installed assembly’s R-value.

For blown-in insulation: Divide the net area with any extra allowance by the manufacturer’s coverage per bag for the selected chart specification, then round up. No layer multiplier is applied. Required installation depth and other product-chart conditions still need to be met.

BEFORE YOU ORDER

Plan Your Insulation Materials

Match your measurements to the selected product’s coverage, dimensions, and installation requirements before placing an order.

PACK COVERAGE

Use Coverage for the Purchased Unit

Check whether the stated area covers one batt, one board, one roll, or a complete pack. Enter coverage for the same unit you intend to buy and price. Different product sizes can have different pack quantities and coverage.

Product reference: Check your selected manufacturer’s data. For Owens Corning products, use its residential insulation product documents to find the applicable specifications.
DIMENSIONS & FIT

Check Cavity Fit and Cutting Needs

An area estimate does not determine how individual batts or boards fit between framing members. Check the product width, length, and thickness against the spaces being insulated. Cutting patterns and usable offcuts can affect the final quantity.

Measure the coverage area: Use the area the product will actually cover. Deduct excluded spaces only once, and follow product guidance for fitting and installation.
BLOWN-IN COVERAGE

Match Bags to the Correct Chart Row

Use coverage per bag for the exact product, application, and insulation level selected from its chart. The quantity estimate does not replace requirements for installed depth, density, or other conditions specified by the manufacturer.

Existing insulation: For a top-up, use manufacturer guidance suited to the existing material and planned addition. The calculator does not derive top-up coverage by subtracting R-values.
LAYERS & BUDGET

Round Quantities for Each Product Separately

Full layers multiply the required coverage for batts, rolls, and boards using the same product. Calculate different materials or partial layers separately. The final pack or bag quantity rounds up, and material cost uses that whole-unit purchase.

Complete your budget: Add labor, equipment rental, delivery, taxes, and accessories separately. An extra allowance increases the purchase estimate; it does not calculate thermal performance.
CALCULATOR GUIDANCE

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers about insulation coverage, layers, blown-in bags, area deductions, and material costs.

How do I calculate how much insulation I need?

Measure the area being insulated and subtract any excluded spaces. For batts, rolls, or boards, multiply the net area by the number of full layers and add your chosen allowance. Divide the coverage requirement by the coverage of one purchased unit, then round up to whole units.

Should I enter coverage per batt or per pack?

Enter coverage for the unit you purchase and price. If batts are sold in packs, use the total coverage of one pack. For boards or rolls, confirm whether the stated coverage refers to one item or a multi-item pack. Using item coverage with a pack price will produce an incorrect cost estimate.

Can I calculate wall, ceiling, attic, and floor insulation?

Yes, when you use area measurements and product coverage suited to that installation. You can combine sections using the same product and coverage specification. Calculate different products, insulation levels, or applications separately. The calculator does not determine product suitability.

Do I need to subtract doors and windows?

Subtract openings and other spaces that will not receive insulation from a gross measurement. Add the excluded areas for each section and choose the matching area unit. If your measured area is already net, leave the deduction at zero to avoid subtracting it twice.

How are multiple insulation layers calculated?

For batts, rolls, and boards, two full layers require twice the net area coverage of one layer when using the same product. Different materials or partial layers need separate estimates. Layer count changes material quantity; it does not calculate the thermal performance of the completed assembly.

How do I estimate blown-in insulation bags?

Choose blown-in insulation and enter the manufacturer’s coverage per bag for the selected chart specification and application. The calculator divides the net area with any extra allowance by that coverage and rounds up to whole bags. It does not apply a layer multiplier. Follow the chart’s required depth, density, and other installation conditions.

Does entering an R-value or depth calculate bag coverage?

No. The optional R-value or RSI label and chart-depth field are reminders only. You must enter the corresponding coverage per bag from your product’s chart. The calculator does not convert these labels into coverage or verify the installed insulation level.

Can I estimate a top-up over existing insulation?

You can estimate quantity using manufacturer guidance for the planned addition and existing conditions. Do not assume that subtracting an existing R-value from a target gives a valid coverage rate. This calculator does not assess existing insulation or select a top-up specification.

How much extra allowance should I add?

Choose an allowance appropriate to the product, cutting layout, handling, and supplier guidance. The calculator starts at 5% for batts, rolls, and boards, and resets to 0% when switching to blown-in insulation. Both are editable starting values. Avoid adding an allowance already included in coverage.

Why is purchased coverage greater than required coverage?

Packs, roll units, and bags round up to whole purchased units. For example, a 47.25 m² requirement with 6 m² per pack needs eight packs, providing 48 m² of nominal coverage. Cutting and fitting can reduce usable coverage; the calculator does not create a cutting layout.

What does the material cost estimate include?

Cost is the rounded whole-unit quantity multiplied by your entered price per purchased unit. Labor, equipment rental, delivery, taxes, and accessories are excluded unless included in that price. Currency selection changes the display and does not convert prices.
