Landscape Rock Calculator

Estimate decorative rock for landscape beds, circular areas and ring-shaped borders. Subtract uncovered spaces, enter your planned layer depth and compare bulk volume, whole bags and optional material cost.

Calculate Your Landscape Rock Quantity

Calculate the area receiving rock, then choose the depth and product details for your estimate.

Subtract paths, stepping stones or other uncovered spaces. Ring mode already removes the inner circle; do not subtract that center again.

Use a depth appropriate to the selected product and application. The calculator does not choose depth from stone size.

Increases the calculated volume by your selected percentage. Leave blank for no allowance.

Bag quantity — optional

Enter bag volume, not weight. If only weight is listed, ask your supplier for volume or coverage at a stated depth.

Rock material cost — optional

Excludes delivery, tax, edging, fabric, preparation and installation. Currency selection does not convert prices.

Need a bulk weight estimate using supplier-provided density? The Gravel Calculator includes density-based weight and ton pricing. This tool focuses on decorative coverage and bag quantities.

QUICK START

How to Use the Landscape Rock Calculator

Measure the area you want to cover, enter your rock depth, and compare bulk volume with bag quantities.

  1. Choose your landscape bed shape

Select a rectangle, circle, ring, or an area you already know. Enter the requested measurements and select the unit beside each field.

  2. Exclude areas that will stay uncovered

Enter the combined area of any additional spaces that will not receive rock. For a ring, the calculator already removes the inner circle, so do not subtract it again.

  3. Set the depth and optional extra amount

Enter your planned finished rock depth. Add an optional percentage for your project if needed; leaving this field blank adds no extra material.

  4. Review bulk volume, bags, and cost

Read the required volume in cubic yards, cubic feet, and cubic meters. Enter a bag’s stated volume or a material price to estimate bags or cost.

BULK ROCK

Rectangular bed with an uncovered area

A 20-by-8-foot bed includes 16 square feet that will stay uncovered. The remaining area receives a 3-inch layer of rock.

Bed dimensions
20 × 8 ft
Uncovered area
16 sq ft
Rock depth
3 in
Extra allowance
10%
Bulk price
$75 per cu yd
  1. Find the area to cover

    (20 × 8) − 16 = 144 sq ft

  2. Convert depth and calculate volume

    144 × (3 ÷ 12) = 36 cu ft

  3. Include the optional allowance

    36 × 1.10 = 39.6 cu ft

  4. Convert to cubic yards and price the material

    39.6 ÷ 27 = 1.4667 cu yd
    (39.6 ÷ 27) × $75 = $110.00

ESTIMATED BULK MATERIAL 1.47 cubic yards · $110.00

Material cost uses the unrounded volume. Supplier order increments and delivery charges may change the final quote.

BAGGED ROCK

Metric bed using 20-liter bags

A 5-by-2-meter decorative bed needs a 4-centimeter rock layer. Each bag contains 20 liters of material, and no extra allowance is added.

Bed dimensions
5 × 2 m
Uncovered area
None
Rock depth
4 cm
Bag volume
20 L
Bag price
$8.50 each
  1. Calculate the bed area

    5 × 2 = 10 sq m

  2. Convert the depth to meters

    4 ÷ 100 = 0.04 m

  3. Calculate volume in liters

    10 × 0.04 = 0.40 cu m
    0.40 × 1,000 = 400 L

  4. Calculate whole bags and material cost

    400 ÷ 20 = 20 bags
    20 × $8.50 = $170.00

ESTIMATED BAGGED MATERIAL 20 bags · $170.00

The bags provide 400 liters in total. For a fractional bag result, round up to the next whole bag.

Planning note: The depths, allowances, and prices above demonstrate the calculations. Choose your actual depth for the selected rock and intended use, and confirm pricing with your supplier.

FORMULAS & COVERAGE

Landscape Rock Volume and Coverage

Calculate the area that needs rock, multiply by your planned depth, and convert the result into purchasing units.

Find the net coverage area

Net area = shape area − other uncovered area

For a rectangle, multiply length by width. For a circle, use π × diameter² ÷ 4. For a ring, use π × (outer diameter² − inner diameter²) ÷ 4. Use the same unit for all dimensions.

Convert area into rock volume

Cubic yards = square feet × depth in inches ÷ 324

This combines two conversions: divide inches by 12 to get feet, then divide cubic feet by 27 to get cubic yards. With metric measurements, square meters × depth in meters gives cubic meters.

Calculated coverage at uniform depth, before any extra allowance.
Rock depth 1 cubic yard covers 0.5 cubic foot bag covers
1 inch 324 sq ft 6 sq ft
2 inches 162 sq ft 3 sq ft
3 inches 108 sq ft 2 sq ft
4 inches 81 sq ft 1.5 sq ft
6 inches 54 sq ft 1 sq ft

Coverage formula: square feet covered = cubic feet × 12 ÷ depth in inches. These depths illustrate volume calculations; they are not installation recommendations.

Add an allowance before counting bags

Adjusted volume = base volume × (1 + extra percentage ÷ 100). Divide that adjusted volume by the stated volume per bag, then round up once to a whole bag. Use matching volume units throughout.

Match coverage to your chosen rock

Rock size, an uneven base, and variations in layer thickness can affect actual coverage. Use the product’s coverage information and a depth suitable for its intended use when planning an order.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers about rock coverage, ring-shaped beds, bag quantities, and material estimates.

How much landscape rock do I need?

Multiply the area you want to cover by the planned rock depth, using compatible units. For square feet and depth in inches, divide their product by 324 to get cubic yards.

Subtract uncovered spaces before calculating volume, then include any optional extra allowance.

How much area does one cubic yard of rock cover?

One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet. At a uniform depth of 2 inches, it covers 162 square feet. At 3 inches, it covers 108 square feet.

These are calculated coverage values before extra allowance. Uneven ground and variations in layer thickness can change actual coverage.

How do I calculate rock for a ring-shaped bed?

Select the ring shape and enter the outer and inner diameters. The calculator subtracts the inner circle from the outer circle using π × (outer diameter² − inner diameter²) ÷ 4.

The inner diameter must be smaller than the outer diameter. Do not enter the center again in the additional uncovered-area field.

Can I subtract stepping stones or other uncovered spaces?

Yes. Add together the areas that will not receive rock and enter that total as the additional uncovered area. Avoid counting overlapping spaces twice.

The excluded area must be smaller than the selected shape’s area. For a ring, the selected shape’s area already excludes its center.

Can I use this calculator for river rock or lava rock?

Yes, for an area-and-depth volume estimate. Enter the planned depth for your selected decorative material and use the bag volume stated by its supplier.

The tool does not determine a suitable installation depth, count individual boulders, or calculate weight from the material’s name.

How many bags of landscape rock should I buy?

Divide the required volume, including your optional allowance, by the volume per bag. Round the result up to a whole bag.

For example, 10.2 cubic feet divided by a 0.5-cubic-foot bag gives 20.4, so you would need 21 bags. Enter bag volume rather than bag weight.

Can I convert the rock volume into tons?

Converting volume to weight requires the material’s bulk density. There is no single tons-per-cubic-yard value that applies to every landscape rock.

Ask your supplier for the appropriate bulk density, then use the Gravel Calculator for a density-based weight estimate. Confirm whether the quote uses US short tons or metric tonnes.

Does the cost estimate include delivery and installation?

No. The estimate covers material at the price you enter. Bag pricing uses the rounded whole-bag quantity; bulk pricing uses the calculated volume including any optional allowance.

Add delivery, taxes, site preparation, edging, landscape fabric, and installation separately. Supplier minimum orders or volume increments can also affect the amount payable.
