Fertilizer Calculator

Calculate dry fertilizer quantity for your treatment area using a product application rate or a nitrogen target. Add the bag weight to estimate whole bags and optional material cost.

Calculate Your Fertilizer Quantity

Use a rate appropriate to your product and application. This tool calculates quantities, not a recommended dose.

Include only the area receiving this application. Exclude paths, paving and untreated sections.

Enter the mass of fertilizer product to apply per selected area unit, not its nitrogen percentage.

Product-rate mode uses the entered rate directly. No nutrient percentage is needed.

Bag quantity — optional

Whole bags round up for purchasing. Apply the calculated product amount, not automatically the full purchased quantity.

Product cost — optional

Per-bag pricing uses whole bags. Per-weight pricing uses the calculated application amount. Delivery, tax and application labor are excluded. Currency selection does not convert prices.

Need to measure a lawn first? Use the Square Footage Calculator to find its area, then enter the portion receiving fertilizer.

SEPARATE APPLICATION FROM PURCHASE

How to Use the Fertilizer Calculator

Enter your treatment area and the rate you intend to use. Then estimate the dry product amount, whole bags and optional product cost.

  1. Enter the area receiving fertilizer

Use the measured treatment area and select its unit. Exclude paving, paths and any sections that will not receive this application.

  2. Choose the correct rate method

Select product rate when your input states the amount of fertilizer product per area. Select nitrogen target when the rate states nitrogen mass; then enter the product’s nitrogen percentage.

  3. Add the net bag weight

Enter the product weight printed on one bag. The calculator rounds up whole bags for purchasing and shows how much product remains after the calculated application.

  4. Review the application amount and cost

Check the product amount separately from the purchased bag quantity. Add a price per bag, kilogram or pound for optional cost, then review the steps or copy your estimate.

Changing calculation methods? The rate field clears when switching between product rate and nitrogen target, so enter the rate intended for the newly selected method.

PRODUCT WEIGHT IS NOT NITROGEN WEIGHT

Fertilizer Calculation Examples

Compare a rate stated as fertilizer product with a target stated as nitrogen. Both examples separate the calculated application amount from the whole bags purchased.

PRODUCT-RATE METHOD

Calculate dry product from a metric rate

A 250 m² treatment area uses an illustrative product rate of 30 g per m². The product is sold in 5 kg bags.

Treatment area
250 m²
Example product rate
30 g / m²
Net weight per bag
5 kg
Example bag price
$18.00 USD
  1. Multiply area by product rate

    250 × 30 = 7,500 g of product

  2. Convert to kilograms

    7,500 ÷ 1,000 = 7.5 kg

  3. Calculate the purchase quantity

    7.5 ÷ 5 = 1.5 → 2 bags
    2 × 5 = 10 kg supplied

  4. Check the remainder and bag cost

    10 − 7.5 = 2.5 kg left
    2 × $18.00 = $36.00 USD

CALCULATED APPLICATION / PURCHASE 7.5 kg product · 2 bags

The bag purchase costs $36.00 USD at the example price. The calculated application remains 7.5 kg; bag rounding does not increase the dose.

NITROGEN-TARGET METHOD

Convert a nitrogen target into product weight

Use an illustrative target of 0.5 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft over 5,000 sq ft, with a dry product containing 20% nitrogen by weight.

Treatment area
5,000 sq ft
Example nitrogen target
0.5 lb N / 1,000 sq ft
Product nitrogen content
20%
Net weight per bag
10 lb
  1. Calculate the required nitrogen mass

    (5,000 ÷ 1,000) × 0.5 = 2.5 lb nitrogen

  2. Convert nitrogen percentage to a fraction

    20 ÷ 100 = 0.20

  3. Calculate fertilizer product weight

    2.5 ÷ 0.20 = 12.5 lb product

  4. Calculate whole bags and product left

    12.5 ÷ 10 = 1.25 → 2 bags
    (2 × 10) − 12.5 = 7.5 lb left

CALCULATED APPLICATION / PURCHASE 12.5 lb product · 2 bags

The 12.5 lb product amount contains 2.5 lb nitrogen at the entered 20% analysis. This calculation does not assess the other nutrients supplied.

Read the nitrogen percentage from the product label

Enter the labeled nitrogen percentage, rather than the total product weight. Oregon State University Extension’s guide to choosing fertilizer explains that the first number in a fertilizer’s N-P-K analysis identifies its nitrogen content. Nitrogen-target mode uses that percentage in the calculation.

Examples, not application recommendations: Select a rate appropriate to the product, treatment area and intended application. This calculator does not determine nutrient need, application timing or spreader settings. Additional delivery, tax and labor charges are excluded.

CHECK THE RATE AND PRODUCT ANALYSIS

Fertilizer Formulas & Rate Reference

Keep fertilizer product mass separate from nitrogen mass, and match the rate’s area unit before calculating quantity.

Use a product application rate

Product amount = treatment area ÷ rate area × product rate

For example, when the rate is stated per 1,000 sq ft, divide the treatment area in square feet by 1,000 before multiplying by the entered product rate.

Convert a nitrogen target to product

Product amount = required nitrogen ÷ (nitrogen % ÷ 100)

Calculate the required nitrogen mass from area and target rate first. Use the product’s labeled nitrogen percentage, with product and nitrogen masses in matching units.

Arithmetic comparison only. The 100 g nitrogen quantity is a reference mass, not a recommended dose for any treatment area. Product amounts are rounded to three decimals.
Product nitrogen content Nitrogen in 1 kg product Product containing 100 g nitrogen
5% 50 g 2.000 kg
10% 100 g 1.000 kg
15% 150 g 0.667 kg
20% 200 g 0.500 kg
25% 250 g 0.400 kg
30% 300 g 0.333 kg

This compares nitrogen mass only. It does not compare nutrient release, other nutrients, product suitability or how much nitrogen will become available to plants.

Check whether the rate means product or nitrogen

A rate of 4 lb of fertilizer product is different from 4 lb of nitrogen. Product-rate mode uses the entered product mass directly; nitrogen-target mode divides nitrogen mass by the product’s nitrogen fraction.

Keep the area denominator attached to the rate

A rate per 100 m² is not the same as that number per square meter. For example, 2 kg per 100 m² equals 20 g per m². Select the unit exactly as stated in the rate you are using.

Calculate one intended application at a time

A seasonal or annual nutrient total may not be intended for a single application. This calculator does not split a total into dates or determine an application schedule.

Bag rounding changes the purchase, not the dose

Divide the calculated product amount by net bag weight and round up for purchasing. Product left over is the mass supplied by whole bags minus the calculated application amount.

Use the correct product information: Nitrogen-target mode calculates a mass from the entered analysis. It does not check whether that product, its other nutrients or the selected rate suit the treatment area. Review the product directions and relevant application guidance separately.

HELP WITH YOUR FERTILIZER CALCULATION

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers about application rates, nitrogen percentages, dry product quantities and whole-bag purchases.

How do I calculate how much fertilizer product I need?

Divide the treatment area by the area covered by the stated rate, then multiply by the product rate. Keep the area units consistent before calculating.

For example, an illustrative rate of 3 kg per 100 m² over 200 m² gives (200 ÷ 100) × 3 = 6 kg of product. The Fertilizer Calculator handles the unit conversions for you.

What is the difference between product rate and nitrogen target?

A product rate states the mass of fertilizer product per treatment area. A nitrogen target states the mass of nitrogen per area, so the product’s nitrogen percentage is also needed.

These inputs are not interchangeable. Switching calculation methods clears the rate field so you can enter the rate intended for the selected method.

How do I enter the product’s nitrogen percentage?

Enter the labeled nitrogen percentage by weight as a percentage number. For a product containing 20% nitrogen, enter 20, not 0.20.

The calculator divides that value by 100 internally. Nitrogen content must be greater than zero and no more than 100%. A zero-nitrogen product cannot meet a positive nitrogen target.

Does nitrogen-target mode calculate a complete nutrient plan?

No. It calculates product mass from the nitrogen target and nitrogen percentage you enter. It does not balance other nutrients or determine whether the product suits the application.

It also does not calculate nutrient release timing or the amount that will become available to plants. Review product directions and relevant application guidance separately.

Should I apply all the fertilizer in the bags I purchase?

Whole bags are rounded up for purchasing. That does not increase the calculated application amount. The result separately shows the product supplied and the amount left after this application.

For example, a calculation requiring 12 lb of product needs two 10 lb bags to purchase, but still calls for 12 lb of product rather than the full 20 lb.

Can I use this calculator for liquid fertilizer?

This tool is designed for dry fertilizer measured by mass. It does not calculate liquid product volume, dilution water, spray concentration or tank quantities.

Do not enter liters or gallons as pounds or kilograms. Liquid applications require the relevant product information and an appropriate calculation method.

Does the calculator recommend a dose or spreader setting?

No. You enter the intended application rate; the calculator converts it into a product quantity. It does not assess nutrient need, select a product or determine a spreader setting.

Calculate one intended application at a time. A seasonal or annual total is not automatically a suitable single-application rate.

How does the fertilizer cost estimate work?

Per-bag pricing uses the rounded number of whole bags to purchase. Per-kilogram or per-pound pricing uses the unrounded calculated application amount. These represent different pricing bases.

Delivery, tax, application labor and supplier minimums are not included. Currency selection labels the price you enter and does not convert exchange rates.
