Paver Calculator

Estimate pavers for a patio, walkway or rectangular paved area. Enter your paving area and coverage per paver, add a cutting allowance, and compare individual pavers, whole packs and material cost.

Calculate Your Paver Quantity

This is an area-based estimate, not a cutting layout. Use one paver size or supplier-provided coverage.

Paver coverage

Dimensions calculate length × width without adding joint spacing. If the supplier states installed coverage per paver, use that option instead.

Choose an allowance for your layout and cuts. No pattern-specific waste percentage is assumed.

Pack quantity — optional

Enter a whole number for packs containing this same paver size. Mixed-size pattern packs need a supplier-specific coverage calculation.

Material cost — optional

Per-area pricing uses the area including your allowance. Per-piece and per-pack prices use their whole-unit quantities. Delivery, tax, base materials and installation are excluded.

FROM PAVING AREA TO PURCHASE QUANTITY

How to Use the Paver Calculator

Enter the area you plan to pave and the coverage of one paver, then include your selected allowance and pack size.

  1. Measure the paving area

Enter length and width for a rectangular space. For an irregular layout, calculate its area first and use the known-area option. Exclude planting beds and other spaces that will remain unpaved.

  2. Enter the coverage per paver

Use length and width for one rectangular paver, or enter supplier-provided coverage per paver. The dimensions option does not automatically add joint spacing.

  3. Add an allowance and optional pack size

Choose a percentage for cuts and spare pavers. If buying packs, enter the number of same-size pavers per pack. The calculator rounds pavers and packs up to whole units.

  4. Compare purchase options and cost

Review individual pavers and whole packs as alternative buying options. Select the matching price basis for an optional material cost, then check the steps or copy the estimate.

Using mixed-size pattern packs? This calculator’s pack option assumes the same paver size throughout. Use the manufacturer’s coverage and ordering method for packs containing several sizes.

Paver Calculation Examples

Follow two area-based estimates using rectangular pavers and supplier-stated coverage. Allowances, pack sizes and prices below are illustrative.

PRICE PER PAVER

A walkway using rectangular pavers

Estimate a 20 × 3 ft walkway using 6 × 9 in pavers. Include an 8% allowance and a price per individual paver.

Walkway dimensions
20 × 3 ft
Paver dimensions
6 × 9 in
Cutting / spare allowance
8%
Example unit price
$1.25 USD / paver
  1. Calculate the paving area

    20 × 3 = 60 sq ft

  2. Calculate coverage per paver

    6 × 9 = 54 sq in
    54 ÷ 144 = 0.375 sq ft

  3. Include the selected allowance

    60 × 1.08 = 64.8 sq ft

  4. Round up pavers and calculate cost

    64.8 ÷ 0.375 = 172.8 → 173 pavers
    173 × $1.25 = $216.25 USD

ESTIMATED INDIVIDUAL PURCHASE 173 pavers · $216.25 USD

Coverage is calculated from paver dimensions without adding joint spacing. The result is an area estimate, not a layout showing individual cuts.

PRICE PER WHOLE PACK

A metric patio using supplier coverage

A patio measures 18 m². The supplier states coverage of 0.20 m² per paver and sells the same-size pavers in packs of 24.

Known paving area
18 m²
Coverage per paver
0.20 m²
Cutting / spare allowance
5%
Pavers per pack
24
Example pack price
$120.00 USD
  1. Apply the selected allowance

    18 × 1.05 = 18.9 m²

  2. Calculate whole pavers

    18.9 ÷ 0.20 = 94.5 → 95 pavers

  3. Round up to whole packs

    95 ÷ 24 ≈ 3.96 → 4 packs
    4 × 24 = 96 pavers supplied

  4. Calculate the whole-pack cost

    4 × $120.00 = $480.00 USD

ESTIMATED PACK PURCHASE 4 packs · $480.00 USD

Four packs supply 96 pavers: one more than the 95-paver estimate including allowance. Do not add the pack quantity to the individual-paver estimate.

Estimate the base layer separately

Paver counts do not include the material beneath them. Use the Gravel Calculator for a separate aggregate layer, entering the depth and product details specified for your project.

Check the intended laying pattern

Manufacturer resources such as Belgard’s paver laying patterns can help you review product-specific arrangements. This calculator does not generate a pattern, cutting plan or mixed-size pack breakdown.

Keep pricing consistent: Per-piece pricing uses whole pavers, while per-pack pricing uses whole packs. Delivery, tax, installation, base materials and additional supplier charges are not included.

CHECK COVERAGE BEFORE ORDERING

Paver Coverage & Ordering Formulas

Check the area covered by one rectangular paver, then include your chosen allowance and supplier’s pack quantity.

Calculate coverage per paver

Square feet per paver = length in inches × width in inches ÷ 144

For dimensions in centimeters, divide length × width by 10,000 to get square meters. These calculations do not add joint spacing.

Estimate whole pavers and packs

Pavers = adjusted paving area ÷ coverage per paver, rounded up

Adjusted area includes your allowance. Divide the whole-paver quantity by pavers per pack and round up again when purchasing whole packs.

Geometric coverage for example rectangular paver dimensions. Quantities exclude allowance and added joint spacing; whole-paver counts round up.
Paver dimensions Area per paver Pavers for 100 sq ft
4 × 8 in 0.2222… sq ft 450
6 × 6 in 0.25 sq ft 400
6 × 9 in 0.375 sq ft 267
12 × 12 in 1 sq ft 100
12 × 24 in 2 sq ft 50
16 × 16 in 1.7777… sq ft 57
24 × 24 in 4 sq ft 25

Calculations use unrounded coverage values. Confirm actual dimensions and installed coverage for your chosen product; a product’s nominal size may not describe its exact coverage.

Joint spacing is not added automatically

The dimensions option uses the rectangular face area you enter. If your supplier provides installed coverage per paver that accounts for the intended joints, use the supplier-coverage option without adding the joints again.

An allowance is not a cutting plan

The allowance increases the area used for estimating quantity. It does not position pavers, calculate reusable offcuts or determine pattern-specific waste. Review edges, curves and borders when choosing the allowance.

Whole packs can add more pavers

An estimate of 132 pavers with 20 per pack requires 7 whole packs, supplying 140 pavers. Those additional 8 pavers come from pack rounding and are separate from the allowance already included.

Separate borders and different paver sizes

Calculate a border and the main paving field separately when they use different products. Avoid counting the border area twice. Mixed-size pattern packs require the manufacturer’s coverage and ordering method.

Compare prices on the same basis: Per-paver cost uses the whole-paver estimate, per-pack cost uses whole packs, and per-area cost uses the area including allowance. Supplier sale increments and additional project materials can change the final order total.

HELP WITH YOUR PAVER ORDER

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers about paver coverage, cutting allowances, whole packs and the limits of an area-based estimate.

How do I calculate how many pavers I need?

Calculate the area you intend to pave, include your selected cutting or spare allowance, then divide by the coverage of one paver. Round the result up to a whole paver.

The paver calculator accepts rectangular paver dimensions or supplier-stated coverage per paver. It can also estimate whole packs when you enter the number of pavers per pack.

Does the calculator include joint spacing?

The dimensions option calculates length × width without adding joint spacing. It therefore uses the rectangular area represented by the dimensions you enter.

If the supplier provides installed coverage per paver for the intended joints, select Supplier coverage per paver. Do not add the same joint allowance again.

How much extra should I allow for cuts and spare pavers?

Choose an allowance based on your layout, edges, cutting requirements and spare-paver needs, with input from your supplier or installer. The calculator does not assign a universal waste percentage.

Leave the field blank or enter zero for an estimate without extra allowance. If your entered area already includes an allowance, avoid adding it twice.

Does a herringbone or diagonal pattern change the calculation?

The calculator uses area and coverage per paver. It does not arrange the pavers or generate pattern-specific cuts.

Review the planned pattern and perimeter to choose a suitable allowance. For mixed-size layouts, follow the manufacturer’s pattern proportions and coverage information rather than treating every piece as the same size.

Why do whole packs supply more pavers than the main estimate?

Packs round up separately. For example, an estimate of 132 pavers with 20 pavers per pack requires 7 whole packs, supplying 140 pavers.

The additional 8 pavers result from pack rounding. Individual pavers and packs are alternative buying options, so do not add their quantities together.

Can I use the pack option for mixed-size pavers?

The pack option assumes every paver has the same entered coverage. It is not a mixed-size pattern-pack calculator.

When a pack contains different sizes, use the supplier’s total installed coverage per pack and its ordering method. Do not use the dimensions of just one piece to represent the entire mixed-size pack.

How do I estimate an irregular patio or a separate border?

Divide an irregular space into measurable shapes, combine their areas and subtract spaces that will remain unpaved. Enter the resulting total using the known-area option.

Calculate borders separately if they use a different paver product. Remove the border area from the main paving field so it is not counted twice. This tool does not calculate a border from perimeter alone.

What is included in the paver cost estimate?

Per-paver pricing uses the whole-paver estimate. Per-pack pricing uses whole packs. Per-square-foot or per-square-meter pricing uses the unrounded paving area including your allowance.

Delivery, tax, installation, excavation, base materials, bedding sand, jointing material and edging are excluded. Supplier sale increments can change the final charge. Currency selection labels the price without applying an exchange rate.
