4 ft × 8 ft Sheets
Each panel covers 32 square feet, approximately 2.97 m². Select this preset when your panels measure 4 feet wide and 8 feet long.
Estimate drywall sheets for walls and ceilings using your total area or surface dimensions. Choose a sheet size, include a cutting allowance, and optionally estimate sheet cost.
Enter the area you want to cover, choose your drywall sheet size, and calculate an estimated sheet quantity with your selected waste allowance.
Select Enter total area if you already know the area to cover. Otherwise, choose Enter wall or ceiling dimensions and add each surface. Use width × height for walls and length × width for ceilings. Select the correct unit for each entry.
Open Subtract doors, windows or other openings and enter their combined area. Skip this if your total area already excludes openings. Closing the option removes the deduction from the calculation. Remember that a cutout may not save a full sheet.
Select a standard sheet size or enter custom dimensions. Adjust the Waste allowance for cuts and unusable offcuts, then select your layer count. Calculate surfaces with different sheet sizes or layer counts separately.
To estimate sheet cost, open Add sheet cost, enter a price per sheet and choose your currency. Select Calculate Drywall Sheets to see the whole-sheet estimate and area breakdown. The cost covers sheets only, excluding labor and other installation materials.
Check your inputs: Count each surface once and include both sides of a partition when covering both faces. Changing a unit does not convert existing entries. After editing an input, calculate again to refresh the results, or select Clear All to start over.
Follow this example to see how wall measurements, openings, sheet coverage, and a waste allowance turn into an estimated drywall sheet quantity.
This example uses one drywall layer, a 16 sq ft opening, a 10% waste allowance, and 4 ft × 8 ft sheets. The waste allowance is an example input, not a fixed requirement for every project.
Round 2.75 up to 3 whole sheets to cover the calculated area, including the selected waste allowance.
Apply this formula to surfaces that share the same sheet size and number of layers.
(Net area × Layers × Waste factor)
÷ Sheet area
Keep surface area and sheet coverage in the same square unit when calculating manually. Use square feet for both, or square meters for both.
Check the panel layout before ordering: This is an area-based estimate. Cuts, joints, panel orientation, and reusable offcuts affect the final quantity. Deducting an opening may not reduce the number of full sheets needed.
Product reference: Check panel specifications and available installation documents on the USG Sheetrock Brand Gypsum Panels page.
Compare coverage per panel and select the dimensions you plan to buy. Use a custom size when your supplier’s panels differ from the calculator’s preset options.
Each panel covers 32 square feet, approximately 2.97 m². Select this preset when your panels measure 4 feet wide and 8 feet long.
Each panel covers 40 square feet, approximately 3.72 m². That is 8 square feet more coverage per sheet than the 4 ft × 8 ft option.
Each panel covers 48 square feet, approximately 4.46 m². This is the largest preset in the calculator. Check how it fits your planned walls or ceilings.
Enter your panel’s actual length, width, and unit. A 1200 mm × 2400 mm panel covers 2.88 m², which differs from a 4 ft × 8 ft sheet.
Metric conversions are rounded to two decimal places. The calculator uses unrounded sheet coverage. Confirm product dimensions, thickness, and suitability before ordering.

Add the area of every wall you plan to cover, plus the ceiling if included. Deduct any excluded openings, multiply by the layer count and waste factor, then divide by one sheet’s coverage and round up. Enter the combined area directly, or add individual rectangular surfaces using dimensions mode.
You can deduct their combined area using the optional openings input. Do not subtract them again if your entered area already excludes them. An opening may require a cutout from a full panel, so deducting its area does not always reduce the number of sheets you need to buy.
The calculator starts with a 10% allowance, which you can change. Choose an allowance based on the panel layout, cuts, openings, and reusable offcuts. The default is not a fixed requirement for every project. Waste is added to the area before rounding the sheet count, rather than added again afterward.
Yes. Multiply a rectangular ceiling’s length by its width, or add it as a separate surface in dimensions mode. Combine walls and ceilings when they use the same sheet size and layer count. Calculate them separately when those settings differ.
Include each face you plan to cover in your surface area, then select the layers applied to each face. Two faces measuring 80 sq ft each give 160 sq ft of surface area. Two layers on each face give 320 sq ft before waste. Calculate surfaces with different layer counts separately.
Yes. Select Custom sheet size and enter the panel’s actual length, width, and unit. Use your supplier’s listed dimensions. For example, a 1200 mm × 2400 mm panel covers 2.88 m² and has a different area from a 4 ft × 8 ft sheet.
The optional estimate multiplies the rounded sheet quantity by your entered price per sheet. Budget separately for labor, fasteners, tape, compound, delivery, and taxes unless included in that price. Selecting a currency changes the displayed currency; it does not convert your entered price.
No. It estimates quantity using each panel’s length and width. Thickness does not change the face area of panels with the same dimensions. Confirm the required thickness, product type, and installation requirements for your project before ordering.
The result is an area-based estimate rather than a panel cutting plan. Sheet orientation, joint placement, openings, and reusable offcuts affect the final quantity. Compare the estimate with your planned layout and actual panel dimensions before buying.
Enter your surface measurements, choose a sheet size, and set your waste allowance. Get an estimated sheet quantity and add a price per sheet to calculate panel costs.
