Tile and joint details
Four tiles separated by grout joints Joint width Grout
Joint width is the gap between tiles. Joint depth is the depth filled with grout.

Measure the joint space to be filled. Tile thickness can be a reference, but adhesive in the joint can reduce the grout depth.

The starting factor of 1.6 is an assumption used by some products. Replace it with the factor specified for your grout. Do not substitute loose powder bulk density. If your product provides coverage instead, use the manufacturer rate method.

Adjust this starting value for handling losses and your product’s guidance. Avoid adding an allowance already included in a rate.

Choose units before entering values. Changing a unit does not convert the number already entered.

QUICK START

How to Use the Grout Calculator

Enter the area being grouted, choose your estimation method, and add product details to calculate the quantity you need.

  1. Enter the actual tiled area

Enter the floor or wall area being grouted and select square feet, square meters, or square yards. Use the installed area without a tile-ordering waste allowance. Calculate different tile sizes or grout colors separately.

  2. Choose how to estimate consumption

Select Tile and joint measurements to enter tile length, tile width, joint width, grout depth, and the product’s consumption factor. Alternatively, select Manufacturer consumption rate and enter a rate matching your tile and joint dimensions.

  3. Add allowance and optional pack details

Adjust the waste allowance for handling losses and your product’s guidance. Enable Estimate grout packs to enter the weight of one bag, tub, or complete kit. Add a price per pack if you also want a material cost estimate.

  4. Calculate and review your quantities

Select Calculate Grout to see the net requirement, quantity with waste, and any pack or cost estimate. Pack counts round up to whole packs. Recalculate after changing inputs, or select Clear All to start again.

Check the product data: The starting consumption factor of 1.6 is not universal. Use your grout’s specified factor or coverage rate, and avoid adding waste twice if your manufacturer’s estimate already includes an allowance.

WORKED EXAMPLE

Grout Calculation Example

See how tile size, joint measurements, and a product consumption factor determine the estimated grout quantity.

A 20 m² tiled area

This example uses 300 × 300 mm tiles, 3 mm wide joints, 8 mm grout depth, and an assumed product consumption factor of 1.6. A 10% waste allowance is added.

Tile dimensions
300 × 300 mm
Joint width × grout depth
3 × 8 mm
Consumption before waste
0.256 kg/m²
Net grout requirement
20 × 0.256 = 5.12 kg
Additional 10% allowance
0.512 kg
Grout including waste
5.632 kg
If supplied in 5 kg packs
2 packs = 10 kg purchased
ESTIMATED GROUT INCLUDING ALLOWANCE 5.632 kg

Approximately 12.42 lb. Whole-pack rounding can make the purchased weight greater than the estimated requirement.

The tile and joint formula

Use tile and joint dimensions in millimeters with the consumption factor specified for your chosen product.

Estimated consumption in kg/m²

((A + B) ÷ (A × B)) × W × D × K

  • A: tile length in millimeters.
  • B: tile width in millimeters.
  • W: joint width in millimeters.
  • D: joint depth filled with grout in millimeters.
  • K: the product consumption factor used with this formula.
Using the example measurements

(600 ÷ 90,000) × 3 × 8 × 1.6
= 0.256 kg/m²

Multiply consumption by the tiled area, then apply the allowance: 0.256 × 20 × 1.10 = 5.632 kg. The factor of 1.6 and the 10% allowance are example inputs, not fixed requirements for every grout.

Manufacturer reference: Check your product’s technical data for its consumption factor and coverage. For a product-specific estimate, see MAPEI’s grout consumption calculator.

Using manufacturer coverage instead? Divide the pack weight by the area it covers to obtain its consumption rate. That coverage must match your tile size and joint dimensions. Enter the rate directly in the calculator’s manufacturer method; do not multiply it by the tile-and-joint formula again.

BEFORE YOU ORDER

Plan Your Grout Quantity

Check the details that affect grout consumption and turn your estimated requirement into a practical material order.

TILE SIZE

Smaller Tiles Create More Grout Lines

For the same tiled area, smaller tiles generally create more joints and need more grout when joint width and depth stay the same. Use the dimensions of each individual tile, rather than the overall sheet size, for a regular mosaic layout.

Mixed sizes: Estimate each tile-size area separately. Irregular mosaics and decorative patterns may need product-specific coverage guidance.
JOINT MEASUREMENTS

Measure the Space Being Filled

Wider or deeper joints increase the estimated grout requirement. Enter the intended joint width and the depth that will actually be filled with grout. Adhesive occupying part of a joint can make this depth different from the tile thickness.

Check compatibility: Follow your selected grout’s permitted joint dimensions and installation instructions. The calculator estimates quantity; it does not select a suitable grout product.
PRODUCT COVERAGE

Use Data for Your Selected Grout

Cement-based, epoxy, and ready-to-use grouts can have different consumption data. Use the factor specified for the tile-and-joint formula, or enter a manufacturer consumption rate that matches your tile size and joint measurements.

Match the weight basis: Use consumption and pack weight data for the same product basis. For a multi-component kit, follow the manufacturer’s stated coverage and complete-kit weight.
PACKS & BUDGET

Round Each Product Order to Whole Packs

Apply your chosen waste allowance, then divide the estimated grout weight by the weight per pack. Round up to whole bags, tubs, or kits. Calculate different colors separately because their remaining quantities cannot be combined into one order.

Material cost: Multiply the rounded pack count by your price per pack. Budget labor, delivery, taxes, and other installation materials separately.
CALCULATOR GUIDANCE

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers about grout coverage, joint measurements, consumption factors, pack quantities, and material costs.

What measurements do I need to estimate grout?

For the tile-and-joint method, enter the tiled area, individual tile length and width, joint width, grout depth, and the product consumption factor. Alternatively, enter a manufacturer consumption rate that matches your tile and joint dimensions. Pack weight and price are optional.

How is this different from a tile calculator?

A tile calculator estimates the tiles or boxes needed to cover an area. This calculator estimates the grout used to fill joints between those tiles. Grout consumption depends on the joint measurements and product data as well as tile size.

How much area does one bag of grout cover?

Coverage varies with tile size, joint width, grout depth, and product. Divide the bag weight by its consumption rate to estimate coverage before any additional allowance. For example, a 5 kg bag at 0.25 kg/m² covers approximately 20 m². Use a rate matching your installation.

What is the product consumption factor, and is 1.6 always correct?

The factor K relates the tile-and-joint formula to the product’s estimated consumption in kg/m². The starting value of 1.6 is used by some products, but it is not universal. Enter the factor specified for your grout with this formula. Do not substitute loose powder bulk density; use manufacturer consumption data if a suitable factor is unavailable.

Is grout joint depth the same as tile thickness?

Not necessarily. Grout depth is the depth of the joint space being filled. Tile thickness can provide a reference, but adhesive occupying the joint may reduce that space. Follow the product’s joint preparation and filling instructions.

Can I estimate grout for mosaic tiles?

For a regular layout of rectangular mosaic pieces, enter the dimensions of each individual piece rather than the full sheet. Smaller pieces generally create more joints per unit of area. Irregular shapes, mixed sizes, or uneven spacing are better estimated using manufacturer coverage data suited to that layout.

Can I use this calculator for epoxy or ready-to-use grout?

Yes, when you use consumption data for that specific product. Do not assume the default factor applies. For multi-component grout, use the manufacturer’s complete-kit coverage and weight on the same basis. The result estimates quantity and does not determine whether a product is suitable for your installation.

How much waste allowance should I add?

The calculator starts at 10%, which you can change. The appropriate allowance depends on handling losses, tile texture, application, and product guidance. If your entered manufacturer rate already includes an allowance, avoid adding the same allowance again.

Why is the purchased weight higher than the grout estimate?

Pack quantities round up to whole bags, tubs, or kits. If you need 5.632 kg and choose 5 kg packs, the estimate is two packs, giving 10 kg purchased. Different grout colors or products should be calculated and rounded separately.

What does the material cost estimate include?

The calculator multiplies the rounded whole-pack quantity by your entered price per pack. Labor, delivery, taxes, tools, and other installation materials are excluded unless included in that price. Selecting a currency changes the display; it does not convert the price.
