Sand Calculator

Estimate sand for a rectangular area, circular space or known coverage area. Enter the layer depth to calculate volume, then add product details for weight, bags and optional material cost.

Calculate Your Sand Quantity

Start with area and depth. Weight and bag estimates are optional.

Enter the layer you are estimating. No automatic compaction or moisture adjustment is applied.

Adds your selected percentage to the geometric volume. Leave blank for no allowance.

Weight estimate — optional

Use bulk density for your sand product and its relevant condition. Weight is not estimated until density is entered.

Bag quantity — optional

Enter the labeled bag volume. Whole bags round up.

Material cost — optional

Excludes delivery, tax, installation and supplier minimums. Currency selection labels your price without converting it.

Estimating a separate gravel layer? Use the Gravel Calculator with that layer’s depth and product details. Calculate sand and gravel quantities separately.

START WITH AREA AND LAYER DEPTH

How to Use the Sand Calculator

Find the sand volume first, then add the product details needed to estimate weight, whole bags and material cost.

  1. Measure the area receiving sand

Choose a rectangle or circle and enter its dimensions. For a layout you have already measured, select the known-area option. Include only the space that will receive the sand layer.

  2. Enter depth and any extra allowance

Enter the planned layer thickness and select its unit. Add an optional percentage if your purchasing plan requires extra material. No automatic compaction or moisture adjustment is applied.

  3. Choose volume-based or weight-based bags

Enter the bag size as printed on the product label. Volume-based bags do not require density. For weight estimates or bags labeled by weight, enter a suitable product bulk density.

  4. Review quantities and your quoted price

Check volume, available weight results and whole bags. Select the matching price basis for an optional material cost estimate. Review the calculation steps or copy the result for your project notes.

Using bags labeled in pounds or kilograms? Select weight per bag and enter a suitable bulk density. Changing between volume-based and weight-based bags clears the bag size so it can be entered in the correct unit.

COMPARE VOLUME AND WEIGHT-BASED BAGS

Sand Calculation Examples

See how bag labeling changes the calculation. Volume-based bags use the required sand volume directly; weight-based bags also need a suitable bulk density.

VOLUME-LABELED BAGS

A circular area with an extra allowance

Estimate a 3-inch sand layer inside an 8 ft diameter circle. Add a 5% allowance and compare the volume with 0.5-cubic-foot bags.

Circle diameter
8 ft
Layer depth
3 inches
Extra allowance
5%
Volume per bag
0.5 cu ft
Example bag price
$5.00 USD
  1. Calculate the circular coverage area

    Radius: 8 ÷ 2 = 4 ft
    π × 4² ≈ 50.27 sq ft

  2. Convert depth and calculate volume

    3 ÷ 12 = 0.25 ft
    π × 4² × 0.25 ≈ 12.57 cu ft

  3. Include the selected allowance

    4π × 1.05 = 4.2π ≈ 13.19 cu ft

  4. Round up bags and calculate cost

    4.2π ÷ 0.5 ≈ 26.39 → 27 bags
    27 × $5.00 = $135.00 USD

ESTIMATED BAG QUANTITY AND MATERIAL COST 27 bags · $135.00 USD

These bags supply 13.5 cubic feet. No bulk density is needed because the bag size is stated by volume.

WEIGHT-LABELED BAGS

Convert a metric sand layer into kilograms

Estimate a 4 cm layer over a 3 × 2 m area. Use an illustrative bulk density of 1,500 kg/m³ to calculate the number of 25 kg bags.

Coverage dimensions
3 × 2 m
Layer depth
4 cm
Extra allowance
0%
Example bulk density
1,500 kg/m³
Weight per bag
25 kg
  1. Calculate area and convert depth

    3 × 2 = 6 m²
    4 ÷ 100 = 0.04 m

  2. Calculate the required sand volume

    6 × 0.04 = 0.24 m³

  3. Convert volume to estimated weight

    0.24 × 1,500 = 360 kg
    360 ÷ 1,000 = 0.36 metric tonnes

  4. Divide by bag weight and round up

    360 ÷ 25 = 14.4 → 15 bags

ESTIMATED WEIGHT-BASED BAG QUANTITY 15 bags of 25 kg

These bags supply 375 kg against an estimated need of 360 kg. The result depends on the entered bulk density matching the product and relevant condition.

Check the footprint of a circular area

Use the Circle Area Calculator to check area from radius or diameter. For a ring-shaped layer, subtract the inner circle’s area from the outer circle’s area, then enter the remaining coverage using the sand calculator’s known-area option.

Examples, not product specifications: Depths, allowance, density, bag sizes and price are illustrative. Calculations use unrounded values before rounding up whole bags. Confirm the sand grade and installation requirements separately.

CHECK COVERAGE BEFORE ORDERING

Sand Coverage & Calculation Formulas

Compare coverage at different depths and choose the right calculation for bags labeled by volume or weight.

Calculate sand volume

Cubic yards = area in sq ft × depth in inches ÷ 324

For cubic feet, divide area × depth in inches by 12. For cubic meters, multiply square meters by depth in meters.

Match the calculation to the bag label

Bags = required quantity ÷ matching bag size, rounded up

Divide volume by volume per bag. For weight-labeled bags, first calculate weight as volume × bulk density, then divide by weight per bag.

Geometric coverage for a uniform layer with no allowance. Bag sizes and depths are examples, not universal product sizes or recommended installation depths.
Layer depth 1 cu yd covers 0.5-cu-ft bag covers 25-liter bag covers
1 inch / 2.54 cm 324 sq ft 6 sq ft 0.98 m²
2 inches / 5.08 cm 162 sq ft 3 sq ft 0.49 m²
3 inches / 7.62 cm 108 sq ft 2 sq ft 0.33 m²
4 inches / 10.16 cm 81 sq ft 1.5 sq ft 0.25 m²

Coverage = available volume ÷ layer depth, using compatible units. Metric coverage is rounded to two decimal places. These values do not include compaction or moisture adjustments.

A 25-liter bag and a 25 kg bag are different inputs

Liters describe volume; kilograms describe mass. A 25-liter bag can be used directly in a volume calculation. A 25 kg bag needs a suitable bulk density to connect its weight with the volume you need.

Use bulk density, not solid-particle density

The calculator needs density for the sand as a bulk material, including spaces between particles. Use a product-specific value for the relevant condition rather than a density for the solid mineral alone.

Keep volume and weight pricing separate

Per-cubic-yard and per-cubic-meter prices use volume. Per-ton prices use the density-derived weight. A US short ton is 2,000 lb; a metric tonne is 1,000 kg. Select the unit that matches the supplier’s quote.

Calculate separate materials and layers individually

A sand layer and a gravel layer can have different depths, densities and prices. Calculate each separately. This tool estimates a continuous layer, not sand used only in narrow joints or voids.

Read the product information before choosing sand

Quantity alone does not determine whether a sand product suits your application. For example, QUIKRETE’s Premium Play Sand product information identifies its intended use and package size. Check the corresponding information for the product you plan to buy rather than treating all sand as interchangeable.

HELP WITH YOUR SAND ESTIMATE

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers about sand coverage, volume and weight-based bags, density and material cost.

How do I calculate how much sand I need?

Multiply the coverage area by the layer depth using compatible units. For square feet and inches, calculate area × depth ÷ 12 for cubic feet, or divide by 324 for cubic yards.

The sand calculator handles the conversions and includes any extra allowance you select. Enter bag details or bulk density only when you need those additional estimates.

How much area does a bag of sand cover?

Coverage depends on the bag’s volume and the layer depth. A bag containing 0.5 cubic feet covers 6 sq ft at 1 inch, 3 sq ft at 2 inches, or 2 sq ft at 3 inches.

These are geometric values without an allowance or compaction adjustment. If a bag lists only weight, you need a suitable bulk density or product-specific volume information to estimate its coverage.

Can I calculate bags labeled in pounds or kilograms?

Yes. Select Weight per bag, enter the labeled bag weight and choose pounds or kilograms. Also enter a suitable bulk density so the calculator can convert your required volume to estimated weight.

It then divides that weight by the weight per bag and rounds up. Switching between volume-based and weight-based bags clears the bag size to prevent the same number being used with the wrong measurement type.

What bulk density should I use for sand?

Use a product-specific bulk density supplied for the sand and material condition you are estimating. Do not substitute solid-particle density or assume one value applies to every sand product.

The calculator accepts kg per cubic meter, lb per cubic foot or metric tonnes per cubic meter. Leave density blank if you only need volume or bags labeled by volume.

Does the calculator adjust for moisture or compaction?

No automatic moisture or compaction adjustment is applied. Volume comes from your entered area and depth; weight comes from that volume and your entered bulk density.

An extra allowance increases the quantity by your chosen percentage. It does not determine the loose material needed for a specified compacted layer. Confirm that relationship with your supplier or installer.

Can this estimate sand for paver joints or concrete mixing?

This tool estimates a continuous sand layer using area × depth. Paver joints occupy only part of the paved area, so applying the full paved area and joint depth would overstate their filled volume.

The calculator also does not determine sand proportions for concrete or mortar. Use the relevant product coverage information or a specified mix design for those applications.

How do I estimate several areas or different depths?

Combine coverage areas when they use the same sand at the same depth. Enter the total using the known-area option, avoiding any double-counted overlaps.

For different depths, calculate each section separately and add the volumes. When buying the same bagged product, calculate the whole-bag quantity from the combined requirement rather than rounding every section separately.

How does the sand material cost estimate work?

Bulk pricing uses the unrounded volume or estimated weight, including your allowance. Bag pricing uses the rounded whole-bag quantity.

Match the price basis to your quote: a US short ton is 2,000 lb, while a metric tonne is 1,000 kg. Delivery, tax, installation, minimum orders and supplier rounding are excluded. Currency selection does not convert exchange rates.
