Mulch Calculator

Estimate how much mulch you need from your bed’s area and planned depth. Compare bulk volume with bag quantities, add an optional allowance and estimate material cost.

Calculate Your Mulch Quantity

Choose the area shape and enter the depth of the new mulch layer you plan to add.

Enter your planned new layer depth. The example value is for demonstrating the calculation, not a planting recommendation.

Adds a purchasing allowance for uneven coverage or measurement uncertainty. This does not change the entered depth.

Bagged mulch

Use the volume printed on your bag. The starting value is editable; bag sizes vary by product.

Material cost — optional

Uses your entered price. Delivery, tax, labor and supplier minimum orders are not included. Currency selection labels the estimate; it does not convert prices.

Input units convert the entered measurement when changed. Bag counts use unrounded volumes and round up to whole bags.

Working with several separate beds? Measure each area and add them before using the known-area option. The square footage calculator can help you combine areas.

FROM MEASUREMENTS TO MULCH

How to Use the Mulch Calculator

Choose your bed shape, enter its measurements and set your planned mulch depth. Compare bulk volume, bag quantities and estimated material cost.

  1. Choose your bed shape

Enter length and width for a rectangular bed, or diameter for a circular bed. Select the known-area option if you already have the total coverage area.

  2. Set the depth you plan to add

Enter the thickness of the new mulch layer and choose its unit. If you are topping up existing mulch, enter only the additional depth you intend to spread.

  3. Check bulk volume or bag quantities

Add an optional purchasing allowance. For bagged mulch, enter the volume printed on the bag label. The required number of whole bags rounds up automatically.

  4. Review quantities and material cost

Read the volume in cubic yards, cubic feet and cubic meters. Select a pricing unit and enter your supplier’s price for an optional cost estimate, then copy your result.

Covering several beds? Combine their areas when they need the same mulch depth. For different depths, calculate each bed separately and add the resulting volumes.

Mulch Calculation Examples

See how bed shape, spreading depth and an optional allowance affect the volume and number of bags you need. Depths and prices below are illustrative.

RECTANGULAR BED

Bagged mulch with a purchasing allowance

Estimate a 3-inch layer for an 18 × 8 ft bed, then add a 10% allowance before calculating whole bags.

Bed dimensions
18 × 8 ft
Additional depth
3 inches
Extra allowance
10%
Bag volume
2 cubic feet
Example bag price
$4.50 USD
  1. Calculate the coverage area

    18 × 8 = 144 sq ft

  2. Convert depth and calculate volume

    3 ÷ 12 = 0.25 ft
    144 × 0.25 = 36 cu ft

  3. Include the selected allowance

    36 × 1.10 = 39.6 cu ft

  4. Round up to whole bags

    39.6 ÷ 2 = 19.8 → 20 bags
    20 × $4.50 = $90.00 USD

ESTIMATED PURCHASE 20 bags · $90.00 USD

The bags supply 40 cubic feet. Delivery, tax and labor are not included in this material cost.

CIRCULAR BED

Compare bulk volume with whole bags

Calculate a 2-inch layer for a circular bed measuring 12 ft across, with no extra allowance.

Bed diameter
12 ft
Bed radius
6 ft
Additional depth
2 inches
Extra allowance
0%
Bag volume
2 cubic feet
  1. Find the circular coverage area

    π × 6² ≈ 113.10 sq ft

  2. Calculate the mulch volume

    2 ÷ 12 = ⅙ ft
    π × 6² × ⅙ ≈ 18.85 cu ft

  3. Convert to cubic yards

    18.8496… ÷ 27 ≈ 0.70 cu yd

  4. Compare the bag quantity

    18.8496… ÷ 2 ≈ 9.42 → 10 bags

ESTIMATED QUANTITY 0.70 cu yd or 10 bags

The volume is rounded for display. Ten 2-cubic-foot bags supply 20 cubic feet; confirm bulk ordering increments with your supplier.

Check the area you will actually cover

For a circular bed, the Circle Area Calculator can help you check the footprint. Subtract any uncovered inner circle or other excluded areas, then enter the remaining area in the mulch calculator.

Choose mulch for your planting area

Volume calculations do not select the right mulch material for your plants. The University of Minnesota Extension’s guide to mulch materials and garden use explains how selection relates to plant type and landscape needs.

Rounding matters: Calculations use unrounded values. Whole bags round up, while displayed volume follows your selected decimal places. A purchasing allowance increases the estimated quantity; it does not change the planned spreading depth.

COVERAGE AT A GLANCE

Mulch Coverage & Calculation Formulas

Compare how far a cubic yard or a bag can spread at different depths, then use the formulas to check your own estimate.

Find the mulch volume

Cubic feet = area in sq ft × depth in inches ÷ 12

Divide cubic feet by 27 to get cubic yards. For metric measurements, multiply square meters by depth in meters to get cubic meters.

Convert volume to whole bags

Bags = total mulch volume ÷ volume per bag, rounded up

Use the same volume unit for both values. If you select an allowance, include it in the total before dividing by the bag size.

Theoretical coverage for uniform layers with no extra allowance. Values are rounded to two decimal places. Example depths are not planting recommendations.
Layer depth 1 cubic yard 2-cu-ft bag 3-cu-ft bag
1 inch 324 sq ft 24 sq ft 36 sq ft
2 inches 162 sq ft 12 sq ft 18 sq ft
3 inches 108 sq ft 8 sq ft 12 sq ft
4 inches 81 sq ft 6 sq ft 9 sq ft
6 inches 54 sq ft 4 sq ft 6 sq ft

Depth changes coverage

The same volume covers half as much area when the layer depth doubles. For example, one cubic yard covers 162 sq ft at 2 inches, but 81 sq ft at 4 inches.

An allowance increases the order quantity

Multiply the calculated volume by 1 + allowance percentage ÷ 100. For example, 2 cubic yards with a 10% allowance becomes 2.2 cubic yards. Choose the allowance for your own project.

Match the price to its unit

A bag price applies to the rounded whole-bag quantity. A bulk price applies to the calculated volume in the selected unit. Supplier minimums, delivery, tax and installation can change the final bill.

Keep weight and volume separate

Bag weight alone does not give its coverage volume. Mulch density and moisture vary, so enter the labeled cubic feet, liters or cubic meters rather than pounds or kilograms.

Before ordering: Check the product’s stated bag volume or coverage and ask your supplier about bulk ordering increments. These formulas estimate a uniform layer; uneven ground and actual spreading can affect the quantity used.

HELP WITH YOUR ESTIMATE

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers about mulch coverage, purchasing quantities and the measurements used in your estimate.

How much mulch do I need for my garden bed?

Multiply the area you want to cover by the depth of the mulch layer, using compatible units. For square feet and inches, calculate area × depth ÷ 12 to get cubic feet. Divide that result by 27 for cubic yards.

Enter your bed measurements and planned depth in the mulch calculator to see both bulk volume and whole-bag quantities.

How many bags of mulch are in a cubic yard?

One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet. That is 13.5 bags containing 2 cubic feet each, so you would purchase 14 whole bags to supply at least one cubic yard. With 3-cubic-foot bags, the quantity is exactly 9 bags.

Check the volume on your chosen product’s label because bag sizes vary.

Should I enter the total depth or just the top-up depth?

Enter the additional depth you intend to add. For example, if your planned final layer is 3 inches and you have assessed that 1 inch of usable mulch remains, calculate the new material using 2 inches.

The calculator does not assess the condition of existing mulch or recommend a suitable final depth for your plants.

Can I calculate mulch for an irregular bed or several beds?

Divide an irregular bed into shapes you can measure, calculate their areas and add them without counting overlapping sections twice. Subtract spaces that will remain uncovered, then enter the total using the known-area option.

You can combine several beds when their planned mulch depth is the same. If their depths differ, calculate each bed separately and add the volumes. When buying the same bagged product for all beds, round up the combined volume divided by the bag volume.

Does the extra allowance change my mulch depth?

No. The allowance increases the estimated purchasing quantity while keeping your entered depth unchanged. A 10% allowance multiplies the calculated volume by 1.10.

It is optional, and there is no single percentage that suits every project. Leave it blank or enter zero if you want the volume without an added allowance.

Can I use a mulch bag’s weight instead of its volume?

Enter the bag’s volume, such as cubic feet or liters. Weight in pounds or kilograms cannot be converted reliably without knowing the product’s bulk density.

If the packaging lists only weight, ask the supplier for the bag volume or coverage at a stated depth. This calculator does not estimate mulch weight.

Does the estimated cost include delivery and installation?

The result estimates material cost only. Bag pricing uses the rounded number of whole bags. Bulk pricing uses the calculated volume, including any allowance you selected.

Delivery, tax, labor, minimum orders and supplier rounding are not added. The currency selector labels the price you enter; it does not convert exchange rates.

Why does my supplier’s coverage estimate differ?

First check that both estimates use the same layer depth, bag volume and coverage area. A deeper layer covers less ground with the same quantity of mulch.

This tool calculates a uniform geometric layer. Product characteristics, uneven ground, spreading and supplier ordering increments can affect the quantity you actually purchase or use.
