MEASURE YOUR LAWN, PLAN YOUR ORDER

How to Use the Sod Calculator

Start with the area that needs new turf, then use your supplier’s product coverage to estimate whole rolls, pieces or pallets.

  1. Measure the lawn area

Choose a rectangle or circle and enter its dimensions. For several sections or an irregular lawn, work out the combined area and select the known-area option. Exclude paths, patios and planting beds.

  2. Choose an extra allowance

Enter an optional percentage to allow for cutting and offcuts around edges or obstacles. Leave it blank for the measured area alone. Use an allowance suited to your layout and installation plan.

  3. Enter your supplier’s coverage

Add the area covered by one roll or piece, one pallet, or both for comparison. Select the matching area unit. Quantities round up to whole units; roll and pallet estimates are alternative ways to purchase.

  4. Review quantities and optional cost

Check the required area and whole-unit quantities. For material cost, choose how your supplier prices the sod and enter that unit price. Review the calculation steps or copy the estimate for your project notes.

Keep measurements consistent: Enter the area that will receive sod before adding an allowance. If your known area already includes extra coverage, leave the allowance blank or set it to zero to avoid adding it twice.

Sod Calculation Examples

See how to exclude uncovered spaces, combine lawn sections and estimate quantities using your supplier’s coverage. Product sizes, allowances and prices below are illustrative.

LAWN WITH A PATIO

Subtract uncovered space before adding extra

A 40 × 25 ft yard includes a 10 × 12 ft patio. Find the area that will receive sod, then add an 8% allowance.

Overall yard
40 × 25 ft
Patio inside the yard
10 × 12 ft
Extra allowance
8%
Coverage per piece
10 sq ft
Example price per piece
$6.00 USD
  1. Calculate both areas

    Yard: 40 × 25 = 1,000 sq ft
    Patio: 10 × 12 = 120 sq ft

  2. Find the lawn area

    1,000 − 120 = 880 sq ft

  3. Add the selected allowance

    880 × 1.08 = 950.4 sq ft

  4. Calculate whole pieces and material cost

    950.4 ÷ 10 = 95.04 → 96 pieces
    96 × $6.00 = $576.00 USD

ESTIMATED PURCHASE 96 pieces · $576.00 USD

These pieces supply 960 sq ft. Enter 880 sq ft in the known-area option and 8% as the allowance. Delivery, tax and installation are excluded.

TWO LAWN SECTIONS

Combine metric areas for a single order

Two separate rectangular lawn sections need the same sod. Combine their areas before calculating rolls or whole pallets.

First lawn section
8 × 5 m
Second lawn section
6 × 3 m
Extra allowance
5%
Coverage per roll
1 m²
Coverage per pallet
40 m²
  1. Calculate the separate areas

    First section: 8 × 5 = 40 m²
    Second section: 6 × 3 = 18 m²

  2. Combine without counting overlaps twice

    40 + 18 = 58 m²

  3. Include the selected allowance

    58 × 1.05 = 60.9 m²

  4. Compare whole-unit quantities

    Rolls: 60.9 ÷ 1 = 60.9 → 61 rolls
    Pallets: 60.9 ÷ 40 = 1.5225 → 2 pallets

ALTERNATIVE BUYING OPTIONS 61 rolls or 2 whole pallets

Rolls supply 61 m²; whole pallets supply 80 m². These are separate options, not quantities to add together. Ask whether your supplier offers partial pallets.

Convert your area before entering supplier coverage

If your lawn measurement is in square feet and your supplier quotes square yards, the Square Feet to Square Yards converter can help you check the equivalent area. In the sod calculator, select the correct unit for each coverage field; unit conversions are handled automatically.

Round at the end: When the same product covers several sections, combine the required areas before rounding up to whole rolls or pallets. The calculator uses unrounded area values for quantity calculations.

CHECK YOUR COVERAGE

Sod Coverage & Ordering Formulas

Use your measured lawn area and supplier’s product coverage to check quantities. Roll sizes and pallet coverage are product-specific, so confirm them before ordering.

Calculate the required area

Required area = lawn area × (1 + allowance ÷ 100)

Subtract uncovered spaces before applying your allowance. For a rectangle, area is length × width. For a circle, area is π × radius².

Convert area to whole units

Whole units = required area ÷ coverage per unit, rounded up

Use matching area units. Apply the formula separately for rolls/pieces and pallets to compare purchase options. Do not add these alternative quantities together.

Illustrative coverage sizes, not universal sod specifications. Each quantity rounds up to a whole unit.
Required area
including allowance
10-sq-ft
pieces
450-sq-ft
pallets
500-sq-ft
pallets
100 sq ft 10 1 1
450 sq ft 45 1 1
500 sq ft 50 2 1
630 sq ft 63 2 2
900 sq ft 90 2 2
1,000 sq ft 100 3 2

A partial pallet result is not a whole-pallet order

If the calculation gives 1.4 pallets, the whole-pallet estimate is 2. Ask whether your supplier sells individual pieces or partial pallets if you want a closer match to your required area.

Calculate coverage from piece dimensions

If only length and width are provided, multiply them using the same length unit. For example, a rectangular piece measuring 2 × 5 ft covers 10 sq ft. Use the supplier’s stated coverage when available.

Compare prices on the same basis

Per-area pricing uses the required area including allowance. Per-piece or per-pallet pricing uses the rounded whole-unit quantity. Delivery charges, minimum orders and installation can change the final total.

Use the lawn surface you intend to cover

Include only areas receiving sod and avoid double-counting overlapping measurements. A sloping surface can have a different area from its flat map footprint; use measurements that represent the surface being covered.

Plan the installation as well as the quantity

This calculator estimates coverage and material cost. For site preparation, sodding and care of newly established turf, see Penn State Extension’s lawn establishment guide . Follow advice suited to your grass type, local conditions and supplier’s installation instructions.

HELP WITH YOUR SOD ORDER

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers about lawn measurements, product coverage, whole-pallet quantities and material cost.

How do I calculate how much sod I need?

Calculate the lawn area that will receive sod, excluding patios, paths and planting beds. Multiply it by 1 + allowance percentage ÷ 100 if you want to include an extra allowance.

Divide the required area by your supplier’s coverage per roll, piece or pallet, then round up to whole units. The sod calculator handles these steps using your selected units.

How many square feet are in a pallet of sod?

There is no single pallet coverage to use for every product. Enter the total area stated by your supplier rather than assuming a standard size.

For example, a product sold as a 450-square-foot pallet uses 450 sq ft in the pallet field. A different product may have different coverage, so confirm the size for the sod you intend to purchase.

How do I find the coverage of one roll or piece?

Use the supplier’s stated area per roll or piece. If only rectangular dimensions are given, multiply length by width using the same length unit.

A piece measuring 2 × 5 ft covers 10 sq ft. If dimensions are given in inches, divide their product by 144 to convert square inches to square feet.

How much extra sod should I include?

Choose an allowance based on the cuts, curves and obstacles in your layout, with advice from your supplier or installer. The calculator does not select a percentage for your project.

The allowance is optional. Leave it blank or enter zero for the measured area alone. If your entered area already includes extra coverage, do not add the same allowance again.

Can I calculate sod for an irregular lawn?

Divide the lawn into shapes you can measure, calculate their areas and combine them without counting overlapping sections twice. Subtract uncovered areas, then enter the result using the known-area option.

When ordering the same product for several lawn sections, combine their required areas before rounding up to whole rolls or pallets.

Why does the calculator round up to two pallets?

The pallet result assumes you are buying whole pallets. If you need 630 sq ft and each pallet covers 450 sq ft, the calculation is 630 ÷ 450 = 1.4, which rounds up to 2 whole pallets.

If your supplier offers partial pallets or individual pieces, ask for a quantity closer to your required area. The roll/piece result is an alternative purchase estimate, not an additional quantity to add to the pallet result.

Can lawn measurements and product coverage use different units?

Yes. Select the correct unit beside each measurement or coverage value. For example, lawn dimensions can use meters while pallet coverage uses square feet. The calculator converts them before dividing.

Changing a populated measurement or coverage unit converts its value to preserve approximately the same physical size. Enter a new number if you intend to change the measurement itself.

What does the estimated sod cost include?

It estimates material cost from your entered price. Per-area pricing uses the required area including allowance. Per-roll, per-piece or per-pallet pricing uses the rounded whole-unit quantity.

Delivery, tax, ground preparation, installation and supplier minimums are excluded. Currency selection labels the price you enter; it does not apply an exchange rate.
