Flooring Calculator

Calculate flooring for one or more rooms. Add a waste allowance, then include box coverage or pricing if needed.

Enter your floor area

For an L-shaped floor, add two rectangular sections that do not overlap. Changing units converts your existing measurements.

Starts at 10%. Adjust for your layout and supplier’s advice. Use 0 if your area already includes waste.

Calculate boxes to buy (optional)

Enter the package coverage to round your order up to whole boxes. Leave blank for an area estimate.

Estimate material cost (optional)

A price per box requires box coverage above. Currency labels your price; it does not convert it.

QUICK START

How to Use the Flooring Calculator

Start with your floor measurements and waste allowance. Add box coverage or a material price only when you need a purchase quantity or cost estimate.

  1. Enter your floor area

Choose “Measure length and width”, select your measurement unit, and enter the room dimensions. Each room’s area appears automatically. Add another room for additional spaces, or choose “I already know the total area” to enter a measured area directly.

  2. Set your waste allowance

The calculator starts with a 10% allowance for cuts and offcuts. Adjust this percentage to suit your flooring product, room layout, and supplier’s instructions. Waste is added to the combined floor area.

  3. Add optional box coverage and pricing

For a box estimate, enter the coverage printed on the package and select its area unit. For a cost estimate, enter your material price, choose a price per square foot, square metre, or box, and select the currency. A price per box also requires box coverage.

  4. Calculate and review your estimate

Select “Calculate Flooring” to see the required area including waste. When box coverage is entered, the calculator rounds up to whole boxes and uses their purchased coverage for area-based material costs. A price per box is multiplied by the box count. Calculate again after changing any input.

Measure each floor section once: enter all room dimensions in the selected measurement unit. Changing a measurement or area unit automatically converts the values already entered. For an irregular floor, work out its area with the square footage calculator and enter the total using “I already know the total area”. Select “Clear” to start a new estimate.

WORKED EXAMPLE

Flooring Calculation Example

This example shows how room measurements, a waste allowance, and package coverage determine the number of boxes to buy and the estimated material cost.

Example inputs

Room length
12 ft
Room width
10 ft
Waste allowance
10%
Coverage per box
20 ft²
Material price
3.00 per ft²
Currency
USD

1. Calculate the measured floor area

Length × width = 12 × 10 = 120 ft².

2. Add the waste allowance

10% of 120 ft² = 12 ft² extra.
Required flooring = 120 + 12 = 132 ft².

3. Round up to whole boxes

132 ÷ 20 = 6.6 boxes, rounded up to 7 boxes.
Purchased coverage = 7 × 20 = 140 ft².

4. Estimate the material cost

Purchased coverage × price per square foot = 140 × USD 3.00 = USD 420.00.

The price is an illustrative input: use your supplier’s price for your own estimate. Without box coverage, the calculator uses the required 132 ft² and estimates USD 396.00. With box coverage, it uses the 140 ft² purchased in 7 whole boxes. The additional 8 ft² comes from box rounding. Installation, delivery, tax, underlay, and other accessories are excluded from this material estimate.

PLAN YOUR PURCHASE

Flooring Calculator: Before You Buy

Use your estimate as a starting point, then check these practical details before placing an order.

MEASUREMENTS

Measure the area you will cover

Include alcoves, closets, and other spaces receiving new flooring. Exclude areas where flooring will not be installed, and count each floor section only once. Split an L-shaped room into rectangles and enter each part separately.

Confirm whether flooring will extend beneath fixed cabinets or appliances with your installer and check the chosen product’s installation instructions.
COVERAGE

Check the exact package coverage

Use the coverage printed on your chosen tile, laminate, or vinyl flooring box. Coverage can vary between products, even when their boards or tiles look similar. Enter that coverage to calculate the number of whole boxes to buy.

Select the unit shown on the package: ft² or m². The calculator converts it to match your floor area. For individual tile quantities, use the tile calculator.
LAYOUT

Consider the layout and cuts

Diagonal layouts, patterned floors, and rooms with many corners can create more offcuts. Choose a waste allowance based on the product and your installer’s layout plan. For Pergo products, review the product-specific installation instructions before finalising your order.

For carpet, confirm roll width and seam placement with your installer. Review these carpet installation tips when planning the work. An area estimate alone does not determine the roll length to order.
BUDGET

Budget for the complete project

Add installation, delivery, and applicable tax to your material estimate. Depending on the flooring, you may also need underlay, adhesive, grout, trims, removal of existing flooring, or subfloor preparation.

Check whether your quoted material price is per box, per square foot, or per square metre. Confirm which additional items are included before comparing totals. Selecting a currency changes the cost label; it does not convert the price.
CALCULATOR GUIDANCE

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers about flooring types, measurements, box quantities, and material cost estimates.

Can I use this calculator for laminate, vinyl, hardwood, and tile?

Yes. It estimates the floor area and adds your chosen waste allowance. For flooring sold in boxes, enter the coverage printed on the packaging to estimate whole boxes. It does not calculate individual tile or plank counts, grout quantities, or an installation layout.

How do I measure an L-shaped or irregular room?

Divide an L-shaped room into rectangles that do not overlap, then enter each rectangle as a separate room. For other shapes, calculate the total floor area first and enter it using “I already know the total area”. Include only the spaces receiving flooring and count each section once.

How do I enter measurements in feet and inches?

Use decimal feet or enter the full measurement in inches. For example, 12 feet 6 inches is 12.5 feet or 150 inches. To calculate decimal feet, divide the inches by 12 and add the result to the feet. All room dimensions use the selected measurement unit. Changing that unit automatically converts the numbers already entered.

Should I add waste if my total area already includes it?

No. If your entered total already includes a waste allowance, set the waste percentage to 0 to avoid adding it twice. Otherwise, enter the measured floor area and choose a waste percentage suited to your flooring product and installation layout. The starting value of 10% is adjustable.

Why is purchased coverage higher than the flooring needed?

Boxes are rounded up to the next whole number. If you need 132 ft² including waste and each box covers 20 ft², the calculation is 132 ÷ 20 = 6.6. You would buy 7 boxes, providing 140 ft². The extra 8 ft² comes from box rounding and is separate from the waste allowance already included.

How does the calculator estimate material cost?

For a price per ft² or m², the calculator multiplies the required area including waste by your price. If box coverage is also entered, it uses the coverage purchased in whole boxes instead. For a price per box, it multiplies the rounded box count by the box price, so box coverage is required. Installation, delivery, tax, and accessories are excluded from this material estimate.

Can this calculator estimate carpet or sheet vinyl orders?

It can estimate the floor area and an area-based material cost. It does not calculate roll lengths, seam placement, or pattern matching. For a separate carpet estimate, use the carpet calculator. Have your supplier or installer confirm the roll quantity and cutting plan before ordering.

Does selecting a currency convert the flooring price?

No. The currency selection labels the estimated cost; it does not apply an exchange rate. Enter your material price in the same currency you select. Measurement and area units convert automatically, but currencies do not.
